The 11th edition of the CPL is all set to start on August 17, when St Lucia Kings will take on Jamaica Tallawahs in the season opener. Over the years, CPL has become one of the most popular T20 franchise leagues.
However, in the initial years, it gained little popularity despite some of the country’s cricketers being immensely popular in India. Only when the tournament was broadcast on prime time in India it gained some popularity. Cricket West Indies has done exceedingly well to organize the league for more than a decade with utmost effectiveness. The T20 league has seen investments from IPL owners as well.
In this article, we will look at the tournament’s history, the CPL winners list, and the details of the team owners.
History of Caribbean Premier League
The CPL happened for the first time in 2013. Back then, it was formulated as a response to the domestic T20 tournament – the Stanford 20/20 cricket. Later, as Allen Stanford, the US Businessman after whom it was named, was found guilty of a financial scam, the tournament halted.
Also, back then, a tournament called the Champions League was devised where top domestic clubs worldwide would play. Here, the qualifiers would come based on their performance in their domestic T20 tourney. That’s why Cricket West Indies, left without a quality T20 tournament, quickly set up a league that would act as a suitable qualifier.

Indian Investments In Caribbean Premier League
